The “Forum on High-Quality Development of Integrated Marine Industries and Wetland Ecological Environment Protection”, jointly hosted by the China Pacific Society, Shandong Institute of Marine Resources and Environment, Binzhou Marine Development and Fisheries Bureau, and Wudi County People’s Government, was held on September 21, 2023, in Wudi County, Binzhou City, Shandong Province. The forum will focus on the overall strategy for high-quality development of marine industries in Binzhou, Shandong, and explore in depth the development paths for strategic emerging marine industries. First visit location: Binzhou Shell Mound Island and Wetland National Nature ReserveThe Binzhou Shell Mound Island and Wetland National Nature Reserve is located in Binzhou City, Shandong Province, on the southwest coast of the Bohai Bay. With a total area of 43,541.54 hectares, it is the most complete shell mound area in the world, featuring both ancient and modern shell mounds coexisting. The reserve focuses on protecting the shell mound island and wetland ecosystems as well as rare and endangered bird species. Shell mound islands are unique geological landforms formed under specific geological and geographical conditions. Compared to similar shell mound islands at home and abroad, the Wudi Shell Mound Island has several distinctive features: first, it has a high shell content—whether buried underground or exposed on the surface, the shell content is almost 100%, with very few other impurities; second, it has both ancient and modern shell mounds—there are not only ancient shell mounds dating back 5,000–2,000 years but also newly formed ones, with a trend toward the formation of a third shell mound island. Other shell mound islands around the world are far from the coast and cannot form new ones; third, it is a typical shell beach wetland ecosystem, serving as a precious marine heritage for the province, China, and even the world. It holds great significance for scientific research and practical applications.### 4. Second visit location: Breeding base of Zhenghai National Marine Ranch Demonstration Area in the offshore waters of WudiThe Zhenghai National Marine Ranch began construction in 2016 and is located in the offshore waters of Wudi County, Binzhou City. Covering an area of 4,025.25 hectares, it is operated by Wudi Zhenghai Shell Dike Island Tourism Co., Ltd. The ranch mainly focuses on bottom seeding and propagation of shellfish species, including clams, quadrangular clams, and scallops. By the end of 2021, a total of 25.9 billion shellfish seeds had been deployed, with 8.5 billion being clams, 9.3 billion quadrangular clams, and 8.1 billion scallops. Leveraging its unique shellfish resources, the Zhenghai National Marine Ranch has registered the geographical indication trademarks “Binzhou Clam” and “Binzhou Golden Oyster,” which have helped build the company’s brand image and enhance the core competitiveness of its products. By promoting one brand to drive an entire industry, it is gradually developing a complete shellfish industry chain and standardized breeding bases.# 5. Matters needing attention1.
