Phase 2 submissions open for the 2023 APEC City Sustainable Development and Innovation Competition (INPUT2)
INPUT2The 2023 APEC City Sustainable Development and Innovation Competition (INPUT2) was proposed by China, jointly proposed by Russia, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, and Hong Kong, China. It is guided by the Department of International Cooperation of China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, the China Center for Science and Technology Exchange, and the Bureau of International Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Supporting organizations include the East China Branch of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, the Shanghai Energy Conservation Association, the China Electric Vehicle 100 People’s Forum, the Alliance for the Collaborative Development of Intelligent Vehicles and Smart Cities, the Lujiazui Financial Trade Zone Building Association in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, the Shanghai Low-Carbon Technology and Industry Development Association, and the Shanghai International Chamber of Commerce. The project is implemented jointly by the Bangkok Innovation Cooperation Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shanghai Council for the Promotion of International Trade.
Phase 1 of the competition closed on July 31, with approximately 50 case submissions received from various institutions, enterprises, and universities across APEC economies, including those from the Thailand-China Science and Technology Association, the Hong Kong Productivity Council, the Hong Kong Institute of Applied Science, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Shanghai Big Data Co., Ltd., Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Tower Construction and Development Co., Ltd., China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, China Telecom, Didi, Hello, Midea, AECOM, and SenseTime. Phase 2 submissions have now officially begun. You can log in to the competition’s official website before September 30 and complete the online submission following the instructions.
PART.1 Submission MethodApplicants can complete online submissions through the “APEC City Sustainable Development and Innovation Competition” portal without needing to submit any paper materials.
Submission process: [Unregistered account] Click the “Register” button to go to the registration page and complete registration as prompted. [Registered account] After registration, click the “Login” button. Once logged in, fill out the relevant forms as instructed to submit your case.
※If you completed your submission in Phase 1, you can still modify the form content before September 30. The final submitted version will be based on the most recent form submitted by the deadline. ※If you did not submit in Phase 1, you can still follow the above “submission process” instructions to complete pre-competition submissions, with the deadline being September 30.
PART.2 Eligible ParticipantsGovernment departments, research institutions, commercial organizations, enterprises, non-profit organizations, and academic institutions from APEC economies can all participate as submitting entities in this competition.
PART.3 Submission TopicsThe projects submitted by applicants can cover solutions, product development, hardware/software development, technical systems, services, architecture, parks, communities, and policy implementation.
Projects that have been fully implemented, are in use, or are currently under implementation are encouraged. If a project is still at the theoretical, design, or unimplemented stage, please indicate this.
PART.4 Relevant FieldsINPUT2 requires the 21 APEC member economies to submit case-based solutions on how to apply intelligent, environmentally friendly, and people-centered concepts to real life through public urban systems, encouraging urban transformation driven by technological innovation.
How to drive Asia-Pacific economic development in the post-pandemic era by revitalizing tourism and promoting trade and consumption; developing public transportation services; revitalizing the environment and advancing green science and technology; as well as reimagining urban life and improving quality of life.
We expect all parties to submit distinctive solutions and practical application cases that are replicable and conducive to fostering regional technological exchanges and trade cooperation. The Secretariat offers suggestions in the following areas:
PART.5 Award Settings
This competition introduces the “APEC Science, Technology and Innovation Award (APSTI)” to recognize advanced technologies and application scenarios in sustainable urban development among APEC economies, as well as contributions made by such cases to promoting trade and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. For this APSTI, one Gold Award and one Silver Award will be selected in each of three categories: Green Economy, Sustainable Transportation, and Livable Cities. Winners of the Gold and Silver Awards receive financial support from APEC. In addition, APSTI will also award: 5 Best Practice Awards and 5 Most Innovative Awards; 1 Best Inclusivity Award to promote gender equality, inclusiveness, women’s empowerment, and children’s interests; 1 Startup Award to encourage sustainable growth and business expansion among startups; and 12 Shortlist Awards.
PART.6 Outcome DocumentsAll works that win the APEC Science, Technology and Innovation Award (APSTI) will be included in the “APEC Blue Book on Sustainable Urban Development.” Together with chapters from representative cities of participating economies, they will form part of the outcome documents and be distributed as competition publications by the APEC Secretariat to all economies.
