The Global Sustainable Cities Award (Shanghai Award) aims to promote the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially Sustainable Development Goal 11, promote the global localization of the New Urban Agenda, actively respond to global development initiatives, and recognize sustainable development. Cities that provide comprehensive solutions provide a platform for the implementation of UN-Habitat's key areas of work and flagship projects and the Global Urban Monitoring Framework. On March 30, 2022, the Executive Director of UN-Habitat officially announced the establishment of the Global Sustainable Cities Award (Shanghai Award) at the first meeting of the Executive Board of UN-Habitat in 2022. On June 27, 2022, the solicitation for the award was announced at the 11th World Urban Forum held in Poland. Application for the first Global Sustainable Cities Award (Shanghai Award) has now begun and the deadline is June 30, 2023.

1. Scope and theme

The Global Sustainable Cities Award (Shanghai Award) is an award open to cities around the world. It aims to recognize cities for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda at the city level since the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2016. Progress and achievements. In the critical eight years until 2030, cities from all over the world are at a special moment of global economic recovery. The theme of the first award is "Building a Sustainable Urban Future", encouraging cities around the world that are working hard for sustainable development to actively participate in the application. Jointly join the global discussion of urban sustainable development options. Cities that have made progress in any one or more of the following aspects are especially encouraged and welcome to participate in the selection Direction 1: Economic vitality and urban prosperity

Including but not limited to: using good planning to leverage the agglomeration effect of urbanization, including improving productivity, competitiveness and innovation capabilities; promoting diversified development of urban economies and promoting local economic prosperity; exploring the potential of green economy and green infrastructure; promoting access and sharing of land and real estate value added due to urban development, infrastructure projects and public investment: sustainable urban finance and urban finance, etc. Direction 2: Ecological construction and green development

Including but not limited to: Ensure the well-being and quality of life of all through environmentally friendly city, regional and community planning, infrastructure and basic services; sustainably manage the city's natural resources and improve urban ecological and environmental services; universally provide safe, barrier-free, green and accessible public space networks; advocate green buildings and low-carbon buildings: reduce the use of non-renewable resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution; improve transportation and motorized facilities, and promote technological innovation in public transportation systems, walking and bicycle infrastructure. Direction 3: Urban security and resilient development

Including but not limited to: Adopt natural-adapted urban layouts and solutions to build cities and settlements that are efficient in resource use, mitigate and adapt to climate change, and are resilient to disasters; build urban infrastructure systems that reduce disaster risks, mitigate and adapt to climate change; fully apply Disaster risk monitoring technology; ensure access to and equitable use of safe and affordable drinking water; improve sewage, rainwater management and solid waste management to improve safety in the event of natural disasters: Social infrastructure and medical care services to effectively respond to the pandemic. Direction 4: Capacity building for sustainable development

Including but not limited to: All parties participate in the coordinated governance of cities and communities; effectively improve the sustainable development capabilities of cities, communities, buildings and infrastructure, and pay attention to and protect specific groups (Poor people, women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities, etc.); Build basic databases to empower urban sustainability assessments; apply and promote green, smart technologies and smart city technologies; support urban, suburban and rural areas through urban planning Establish positive economic, social and environmental links, etc.; promote the further improvement of urban sustainable financing and effective governance capabilities through policy, legislative and institutional innovation, and extensive public participation.

2. Application qualifications

Cities from all countries are eligible to apply for the first Global Sustainable Cities Award (Shanghai Award). The following cities are particularly welcome to declare: ·Outstanding performance in economic, social, environmental and other aspects in the field of sustainable urban development since 2016; ·Since 2016, great progress and innovation have been made in the field of sustainable urban development, with significant growth potential; ·Committed to further achieving ambitious goals of sustainable development; ·Best urban practices in the field of sustainable development can be promoted as demonstrations around the world, inspiring and driving other cities to jointly better implement sustainable development actions.

3. Awards and reward settings

The first Global Sustainable Cities Award (Shanghai Award) will produce no more than 5 award-winning cities and award special awards as appropriate. Organize an annual award ceremony on an international exchange platform. Winners of the first Global Sustainable Cities Award (Shanghai Award) will receive certificates, medals and special souvenirs. The excellent practices and achievements of the award-winning cities in promoting sustainable development will be included in the history of human settlements development and will be included in the New Urban Agenda Best Practices Library, winning glory for the city, enhancing the pride and honor of urban citizens, and will be invited to participate in Important international events such as the World Urban Forum and the World Cities Day home event, opportunities to communicate with outstanding cities around the world, and also attract more tourists and investors and create new opportunities for local economic development.
