New Energy Nexus (NEX) has partnered with COP28, the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to launch the unique NEX COP28 Climate Technology Innovation Accelerator program, aiming to support this year’s UN climate conference held at Dubai Expo City. This initiative is designed to support early-stage climate technology innovation startups in the Global South by strengthening their capacity building, opening up new capital sources, and creating business opportunities for these innovative firms at the initial stages. | What is COP?

COP typically refers to the abbreviation for the annual Conference of the Parties under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It is a global climate change negotiation forum where government representatives from various countries gather to discuss and agree on responsibilities to address climate change, as well as to develop international climate policies and action plans.

In 1997, the Kyoto Protocol was adopted, making greenhouse gas control or reduction a legal obligation for developed countries. In December 2015, COP21 approved the Paris Agreement.

Each year, the COP also brings together youth groups, international organizations, NGOs, and businesses from around the world to voice their opinions, promote exchanges and dialogue on global climate action, and reach consensus.

| Application Guide for the Acceleration Camp

This year’s COP28 conference is uniquely designed to advance climate solutions across various sectors and in the Global South. This not only helps address climate change but also generates significant economic value and social opportunities.

The selected innovative companies will receive the following opportunities:

• 💡Field visits and tours with UAE partners and enterprises
• 💡The chance to participate in various COP28 initiatives and activities in the Green Zone
• 💡Media exposure through COP28 and NEX-related media and marketing campaigns
• 💡Join the innovation company community (limited spots, first come, first served)
• 💡Access to the NEX Slack global network composed of large enterprises, investors, and innovative companies, as well as the NEX electronic newsletter Which companies can apply for the acceleration camp?
• 💡Climate technology startups or innovative business models in their early stages, aiming to drive innovation in the following COP28-related areas: renewable energy, energy storage, energy efficiency, building environments, carbon capture, transportation, climate finance and infrastructure, food, agricultural technologies, and water resources.
• 💡Entrepreneurs committed to building sustainable companies, eager to connect with and learn from other innovative firms worldwide that share a common mission.
• 💡Startups that have completed seed funding rounds and possess innovations that have undergone proof of concept and product prototyping.

Project timeline:

• September 5 – Application deadline for initiation
• October 8 – Application deadline (applications accepted on a rolling basis)
• October 31 – Final selection results for innovative startups
• November–December – Acceleration camp
• November 30–December 12 – COP28 held in Dubai
